What’s the Best Week to Have an Elective Ultrasound? A Week-By-Week Guide
Pregnancy flies by, and most families only realize afterward how much of it was a blur. Ultrasounds slow life down for a moment—you get to see your baby, really see them, at different milestones. At our studio in Pitman, families often ask, “When is the perfect week to come in?”
Here’s a simple guide based on what matters most to you.
6–8 Weeks: The First Glimpse
This is the moment most parents cry—there’s something undeniably surreal about seeing that flicker of a heartbeat.
Best for:
Seeing baby’s heartbeat
Confirming baby placement
A simple measurement to confirm size and dates
13–16 Weeks: We can tell the sex of the Baby!
During this window, the excitement level skyrockets.
Why this window is popular:
Baby’s size allows clear visualization
Many gender reveal parties are scheduled based on these results
At Wonder Time we have a 99.9% accuracy rating!
First “profile views” appear
25–30 Weeks: Baby’s Face in HD 3D 4D
Faces really take shape now—chubby cheeks start to form and expressions become visible.
From these sessions, parents often say:
“I finally feel like I met them.”
31–34 Weeks: Still Amazing—Just Cozier
Baby has grown…and claimed their real estate.
You often see:
Nose shapes
Pouty lips
Personality
If baby hides, hydration and positioning can help. We will sometimes have you take a walk, and pop back in to the office to see if baby has moved into a better position. This is the reason we offer 50% off Return Visits with all of our “Baby” sessions. You know that your baby moves- a lot! We sometimes just need to have a second session if baby isn’t moving the way we want. I always like to say that the second time is the charm! All of our sonographers are trained to know when a second session might help, and when we would advise you that we are getting the best pictures we can (usually lower than average amniotic fluid, baby’s head low in the pelvis, a placenta that is right by the face). Our #1 goal is to get you the best pictures possible, and to give you an experience that makes YOU happy!
Over 34 Weeks
We can still get great pictures, but it does become more dependent on:
The location of the placenta (posterior is best)
The amount of amniotic fluid (we like a bit above average)
The position of baby (breech and transverse positions can be challenging)
So When Is The Best Time?
💗 For gender: 13 weeks or more
💗 For 3D/4D face detail: 30 weeks
