Can You Hear a Heartbeat at 6 Weeks? What to Expect at Your First Ultrasound
Finding out you’re pregnant is exciting—but those early weeks can also feel uncertain.
One of the most common questions we hear is:
👉 “Can you hear a heartbeat at 6 weeks?”
The short answer is: sometimes—but not always.
And that’s completely normal.
💛 What’s happening at 6 weeks?
Around 6 weeks, your baby is still very small—about the size of a lentil.
At this stage:
The heart has just started beating
The embryo is still developing rapidly
Dates can easily be off by a few days
Because of this, what you see (or don’t see yet) can vary.
🩺 Can you hear the heartbeat?
At 6 weeks, it’s more accurate to see the heartbeat than to hear it.
Using ultrasound, we’re typically looking for:
A small flicker within the embryo
Early cardiac activity
A measurable heart rate
In many cases, especially early on, the heartbeat is visible before it is audible.
✨ How we do it at Wonder Time
At Wonder Time, we take a safe, professional, and reassuring approach to early ultrasounds.
Because we are trained in diagnostic ultrasound, we focus on what’s most appropriate at this stage:
We visualize the heartbeat as a flicker on the screen
We measure the heart rate when possible
We record a short video, so you can watch that tiny heartbeat again and again
This approach allows you to:
👉 actually see your baby’s heartbeat
👉 leave feeling reassured
👉 and have something meaningful to take home
All in a calm, private setting where you’re not rushed.
⚠️ What if you don’t see a heartbeat yet?
This is very important to understand:
Not seeing a heartbeat at 6 weeks does not automatically mean something is wrong.
Common reasons include:
You’re earlier than expected
Late ovulation or implantation
Positioning of the pregnancy
This is why many early visits are followed by a repeat scan a few days later.
🧘♀️ Why many moms choose an early reassurance scan
Those early weeks can feel like a waiting game.
An early ultrasound can help you:
Confirm that the pregnancy is developing
Check for a heartbeat when appropriate
Feel more connected and less anxious
Even a brief visit can make a big emotional difference.
📅 When is the best time to come in?
For the best chance of seeing a heartbeat, many families choose:
👉 6–8 weeks
💛 A calm, reassuring experience
At Wonder Time, our goal is simple:
👉 to give you clarity, reassurance, and a moment to connect
Whether it’s your first pregnancy or your third, we understand how important this stage is—and we’re here to support you through it.
