Frequently Asked Questions

Wonder Time Stroke & Vascular Wellness Screening

What is a Stroke & Vascular Wellness Screening?

This screening evaluates several important factors associated with stroke, vascular disease, aneurysm, abnormal heart rhythms, and poor circulation. It is a noninvasive wellness screening designed to provide information you can discuss with your healthcare provider.

What is included in the screening?

Your screening includes:

✔ Carotid Artery Ultrasound Screening

✔ Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening

✔ Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) Screening

✔ 6-Lead Heart Rhythm Screening

✔ Blood Pressure Measurement

✔ Physician-Reviewed Results Report

How long does the screening take?

Most appointments take approximately 30 minutes.

Is the screening painful?

No. All components of the screening are noninvasive and painless.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

No. This is a self-pay wellness screening and does not require a physician referral.

What is a carotid artery screening?

A carotid screening uses ultrasound to evaluate the carotid arteries in your neck for plaque buildup that may increase the risk of stroke.

Can this screening tell me if I'm going to have a stroke?

No screening can predict a stroke. However, identifying risk factors such as carotid plaque, elevated blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, and poor circulation may help you and your healthcare provider make informed decisions about your health.

What is an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA)?

An abdominal aortic aneurysm occurs when a portion of the body's largest artery becomes enlarged. Many aneurysms have no symptoms and are discovered through screening.

Who is most at risk for an abdominal aortic aneurysm?

Risk factors include:

  • Age 65 and older

  • Current or former smoking

  • High blood pressure

  • Family history of aneurysm

  • Male sex

  • History of vascular disease

What is an ABI screening?

An Ankle-Brachial Index (ABI) compares blood pressure measurements in your arms and ankles to evaluate circulation in your legs.

Why is ABI important?

Poor circulation in the legs may be associated with peripheral arterial disease (PAD), which can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other cardiovascular conditions.

What is the heart rhythm screening?

The test takes approximately 30 seconds.

You will place your fingers on the device sensors while remaining seated and relaxed. No needles, electrodes, gels, or radiation are involved.

We use a 6-lead ECG device to screen for certain heart rhythm abnormalities, including possible atrial fibrillation (AFib).

What is atrial fibrillation (AFib)?

AFib is an irregular heart rhythm that may increase the risk of stroke. Many people with AFib have no symptoms and are unaware they have it.

Will I receive my results immediately?

A preliminary review may be discussed during your visit, but all results are reviewed by a physician before your final report is issued.

Who reviews my results?

Your screening findings are reviewed by a licensed physician before your report is finalized.

Will I receive a written report?

Yes. Following physician review, you will receive a personalized report summarizing your screening results and any recommended next steps.

Your report will be emailed to you free of charge. Printed copies are also available for pickup at our office or can be mailed directly to you for a nominal $5 fee.

What happens if an abnormality is found?

If your screening identifies findings that may warrant further evaluation, your report will recommend follow-up with your primary care provider or an appropriate specialist.

Is this a diagnostic medical examination?

No. This is a wellness screening intended to identify potential risk factors. It is not a comprehensive diagnostic examination and does not replace medical care.

Can this screening diagnose disease?

No. The screening is designed to identify potential concerns that may require further evaluation by your healthcare provider.

Who should consider this screening?

This screening may be beneficial for adults who:

  • Are age 40 or older

  • Have high blood pressure

  • Have high cholesterol

  • Have diabetes

  • Have a history of smoking

  • Have a family history of stroke

  • Have a family history of aneurysm

  • Have a family history of heart disease

  • Want to be proactive about their vascular health

What should I wear?

Comfortable two-piece clothing is recommended. You may be asked to expose your neck and abdomen for portions of the ultrasound examination.

Do I need to fast?

Yes. To ensure the best possible visualization of the abdominal aorta, please do not eat or drink anything except water for at least 6 hours before your appointment.

You may continue to drink water and take your prescribed medications as directed by your healthcare provider unless instructed otherwise.

Failure to follow fasting instructions may limit the quality of the examination and could require rescheduling.

Does insurance cover this screening?

This is a self-pay wellness screening and is not billed to insurance. We do accept FSA and HSA payments in addition to cash and card payments.
